Rev. Angela Dionne Madden

Service to the Church

Reverend Angela Madden is a native Kansan. Born and raised in Wichita, she is a life-long Presbyterian. Since 2006 she has been the pastor head of staff at the 200-member Pratt Presbyterian Church in Pratt, Kansas. For the last four consecutive years her congregation was awarded a "Certificate of Growth in Membership" by the Presbytery of Southern Kansas. Recently, her congregation purchased an adjacent property with a 5,300 square foot building that they are remodeling to cover their expansion needs. In the aftermath of the terrible May 2007 tornado that totally destroyed the nearby town of Greensburg and gained national attention, Pratt Presbyterian, under her leadership, served as the emergency response hub and took the lead on getting supplies to hurting people and hosting mission teams. At the recent General Assembly in Minneapolis, Pratt Presbyterian received a delegate "shout out" and podium recognition and thanks for the notes of prayer and encouragement that congregation members sent to each of the 700 delegates to the GA.

In 2009 Rev. Madden served as Moderator of the 69-church Presbytery of Southern Kansas. She has been a member of that Presbytery's Executive Council for 3 years and currently chairs the Executive Council. She is also President of the Presbytery's Board of Trustees. From 2006 to 2008 Rev. Madden served a two-year term on the Committee on Preparation for Ministry.

On two occasions Rev. Madden was employed at the Presbyterian Church USA central office in Louisville, KY. After graduating from college in 1993 she held a one-year term position as a Program Assistant for Young Adults. In this capacity she helped recruit and place young adults in mission volunteer positions.

Upon graduating from seminary Rev. Madden took a position as a full-time, ordained staff Associate for Ecumenical and Mission Partnerships Relating to Europe and the Middle East from November 2005 to May 2006. In January 2006, she traveled to the Holy Land with the PC(USA) Moderator. In February 2006, Rev. Madden was preaching in an Arab Presbyterian church in Beirut at the same time that the Danish Embassy and three Christian churches were under armed attack as a result of the outrage that swept the Middle East over the publication of a cartoon in a Danish publication demeaning Mohammed. Rev. Madden's mission position ended when a dramatic shortfall in national stewardship resulted in the PC(USA) making severe cutbacks to its mission staff. (Rev. Madden is saddened that our Church missions are currently being downsized yet again as mission stewardship nationally continues to slide.)

While seeking her first call to ordained ministry, Rev. Madden served a five-month stint from July to November 2005 as Interim Coordinator of Youth Ministries at Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church in Louisville, a 1,500-member urban church. While there she also helped author the worship liturgy for the 13-week series for "The Present Word," a PC(USA) publication. She wrote the fall 2006 and fall 2007 publications as well as the Teaching Aid for fall 2007.

While in seminary, Rev. Madden served as pulpit supply in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. In 2003 she was the Seminary's "Phoneathon Award Winner" for most funds raised from Alumni. From January to May of 2004 she served in a part-time clinical chaplaincy program at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, the only children's trauma hospital within a three-state radius. Her areas of focus were the Children's Emergency/Trauma Department, Pediatric Surgery, and Neonatal Intensive Care. Also in 2004 she served in a three-month full-time seminary internship at Harvey Browne.

During her college and seminary years Rev. Madden served as a participant and leader in a variety of local, regional, national and international Presbyterian-affiliated organizations and conferences. Of particular interest to our PNC members, from 1990 to 1992 she served on the Pastor Nominating Committee of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wichita.

Education and Ordination

Rev. Madden graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in International Studies of Western Europe and French Minor at Wichita State University in 1993. In 1997 she graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. She attended Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 2005. Rev. Madden was ordained in her home presbytery, the Presbytery of Southern Kansas, on January 15, 2006.

Family and Interests

Rev. Madden lives with her husband, Jack Scott, and their adorable, almost walking, one-year-old son, Major. She also enjoys the affection of their family pets, a Golden Retriever "Winfield," and a calico cat "Callie." Rev. Madden's hobbies include aerobic dance, reading, hiking and antiquing. She enjoys learning about people, cultures and traditions. Her dream is to visit every continent and every state. So far she has been to 38 states and four continents.

Her husband, Jack, is also a native Kansan. He graduated from Phillips University in Oklahoma with Bachelor's degree in Political Science and History. Jack has had a long career in sales. He sold investments and held a "Series 3" license from the National Futures Association and a "Series 7" license from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. He's also sold high-end luxury automobiles and advertising for Knight Ridder newspapers. Jack is an ordained Elder and an ordained Deacon in the PC(USA). His interests include church life, antiques, cars and history.

Both Rev. Madden and Jack cherish time with friends and family. They are excited about her call to The First Presbyterian Church of Willoughby and meeting new friends and mission partners in Ohio.
